How To Add Vector Images Into Adobe Illustrator

As a dedicated vector editor and one of the most well-known programs in the graphic design industry, Adobe Illustrator makes it easy to work with vector images of any kind. Here is a step-by-step guide to adding a vector image in Adobe Illustrator:

How To Import a Vector Image Into Adobe Illustrator

There are two main ways to work with vectors in Adobe Illustrator: opening the image in a new document or importing it into an existing project. If you’re already working on a project and want to use elements from a Shutterstock clipart set, importing the vector files is a smart choice.

  • Step 1: Go to File > Place, or press Ctrl + Shift + P. The Place dialog box will appear. Place is Illustrator’s version of a typical import function.

  • Step 2: Choose the image.

  • Step 3: Click on the Place button.

There are additional settings you can select before placing an item, such as whether to link or unlink it to your document. If you want to be able to edit the vector image within the document, make sure the Link box isn’t checked.

How To Open a Vector Image in Adobe Illustrator

If you’re creating a company website or logo based on a Shutterstock template, it may be best to open the vector in a new document. Here’s how:

  • Step 1: Go to File > Open, or press Ctrl + O. The Open dialog box will appear.

  • Step 2: Find the vector image.

  • Step 3: Select the vector and click on Open. You can also double-click the file name.

If Adobe Illustrator is set as your default application for editing vector file types, such as EPS, AI and SVG files, double-clicking on any one of these will automatically open it in Illustrator.
