Editing Social Media Image Sizes

Creating engaging posts and professional designs for your social media accounts may seem like a straightforward task, but every social media platform has different image ratios and sizes.

These social media image sizes range so dramatically that you often can’t get away with uploading the same initial image and cropping it — you’ll need to edit and optimize your images for each platform to impress visitors and boost engagement.

Images like your Twitter profile picture have a 1:1 ratio and don’t pose much of a challenge, but how many of us have a brand image measuring 1080 x 1920 pixels readily available for your Instagram story?

Take the stress out of your social media designs with Shutterstock Editor, which allows you to upload, edit, and create new designs. Image presets enable you to resize any social media image in seconds without reducing the image quality.

How to Resize Any Image for Social Media
While most posts and banner images for social media are horizontal, a few types of images are vertical. Resize your design in Shutterstock Editor before you begin editing in order to lay the groundwork for a great image.

Each image preset will automatically size your design at the ideal pixel resolution for each platform. You can choose to reduce or increase the amount of pixels without distorting your image because the image ratio is locked for each image preset.

  • Within Shutterstock Editor select Open Designs to import your own images, or click and drag your desired image into the Editor canvas from your desktop. Click the Search tab on the left-hand side of the Editor to browse the millions of royalty-free images available at Shutterstock.
  • Click the Preset Sizes tab on the left-hand side of the Editor. Here you can scroll and select the type of social media post you are making to automatically size your image. For example, clicking “LinkedIn Post” will size your image to 1200 x 627 pixels.
  • When your design is complete click Download at the top-right corner and select your preferred File Format. Most platforms accept images formatted as JPEG or PNG.
