Adobe Illustrator is a powerful program for creating and editing vector images, from business logos to superheroes. You don’t have to be an expert to get started. This simple guide will teach you how to make a vector image in Illustrator.
Step 1: Add a Few Shapes
On the toolbar at the left-hand side of your screen, look for Shape tool. The Rectangle tool is visible at first, but you can also find the Ellipse tool, Rounded Rectangle tool and Polygon tool by clicking and holding the Rectangle tool.
Pick a shape and draw it on your canvas by clicking and dragging. Tip: To draw a perfect circle or square, hold the Shift key while you drag the mouse.
Step 2: Adjust Your Shapes
After you’ve finished drawing, click on the Selection tool. This looks like a black arrow. Now left-click on one of the objects. A box with six small squares will appear around it.
Step 3: Use the Shape Builder
Try overlapping several circles or rectangles. Now click on the Shape Builder tool — it looks like two circles. Draw a line through the shapes you want to glue together. When you release the mouse, you will have a single, awesome object!
Step 4: Add Some Color
Click on your new vector image using the Selection tool. Now left-click on one of the colors from your color palette. This transforms the object color to match. Congratulations! You’ve made your first vector image.
