How to Make a Seamless Pattern in Illustrator

How to Make a Seamless Pattern in Illustrator

When you are designing website elements in Illustrator, there may be times when you need to make a seamless pattern. Fortunately, Illustrator is a user-friendly program with tools that allow businesses and individuals to take designs they imagine and turn them into reality.

Shutterstock provides access to over 200 million stock content pieces that make it quick and easy to create your projects. From vectors to images to music clips, with a subscription to Shutterstock, having all the elements you need is as easy as clicking download. With Shutterstock and Illustrator you can purchase and edit content to be exactly what you need it to be.

Step by Step Instructions

First, create a new document. Open the file with the original art you want to use and select all. Paste the selection into your new document, resize it and copy it again two or three times. Now you’ll have several copies of a pattern with two rows and columns that can be used as a grid.

Now you can add color to the background if it matches the image. Distances between rulers and guides and copies can be adjusted and you can connect the various subjects graphically. This provides coherence and continuity to all copies of the pattern.

Once step two is done, choose select all, the choose object then pattern then make. On your workspace, a palette will now appear and you can click the “pattern tile” tool. On your art board, a tile module will appear so you can change your patterns and their dimensions with the new settings.

Finally, everything is ready for you to create your pattern. Within the document, you’ll need to make a new layer and keep any background you have visible. Your pattern should be stored on the swatches palette and it can be placed inside the shape you have created.
