In this practical guide, we've outlined how to convert Keynote to Powerpoint format, so you can work between the two presentation programs.
Keynote is only available for Mac OS, so converting to Powerpoint will also allow you to collaborate between Mac and Windows PCs. You'll be changing the Keynote file extension ".key" to the Powerpoint extension ".pptx" (or ".ppt").
How to Convert Keynote to Powerpoint
1. First, open your current Keynote project. Choose "File" > "Export To" > "Powerpoint" from the main menu.
2. In the Export To dialog box, you can select an Output Destination for your converted file. If you click the "Advanced Options" arrow, you can specify the exact Powerpoint format you want to create. Newer versions of Powerpoint use the file extension ".pptx", while Powerpoint software from 1997-2003 only works with ".ppt".
3. When you're satisfied with the settings, click the "Export" button. Your original .key file is kept intact, and Keynote creates a copy in the Powerpoint format. Close the Keynote software, find the converted presentation on your hard drive, and double-click on it to open the Powerpoint version.
Converting Keynote with an iPad
Open the Keynote app on your iPad, and press the "Share" button in the Presentation Manager.
Next, press "Send a Copy", and choose a Keynote document from the list. Select the "Microsoft Powerpoint" format, and then choose where to send the copy. For example, you can email it anywhere, or send it to a cloud-based server like DropBox.
Keep in mind that when you convert a Keynote file to Powerpoint format, it will find replacements for any unsupported fonts, transitions, and animations.
Converting Keynote on a Windows PC
If you don't have access to a Mac, and you're trying to open an existing Keynote file on your PC, we recommend signing up for iCloud. Apple's cloud-based service includes online versions of Keynote, Pages, and Numbers.
