How To Add Texture in Illustrator

Having a good working knowledge of Illustrator gives you access to a powerful visual design program. Illustrator’s power comes from its large variety of tools and features. It’s important to know how to do some of the more advanced things with this program, such as adding texture in Illustrator. Illustrator’s texture features can give your project depth and realism. Here is a comprehensive guide to using Illustrator’s texture features.

Find Textures You Like

The great thing about adding texture in Illustrator is that you can control the number of options. Illustrator makes it possible for users to add to their texture library by downloading them from the internet. The program comes with a few standard textures, but to truly take advantage of this feature, you’ll have to look for some on your own. Simply do a quick internet search for “Illustrator textures” to get access to more. Then, choose and download your preferred textures. Some websites offer simple textures for free, but you may have to pay a few dollars for more unique textures for specific projects of yours.

 Add Textures to Your Program

After you’ve downloaded a texture from a site, you then have to add the file to your copy of Illustrator. Launch Illustrator and open the project you’re working on. Click on the “Effect” menu and choose “Texturizer.” After this step, select “Texture,” and you’ll be prompted to search for your downloaded file from your online search. Navigate the file opener to your downloads folder and select each texture file you want to start using for this project. Then, you’ll need to choose “Load Texture” as the last step.

Incorporate the Texture Into Your Object

Once you have your favorite textures loaded into Illustrator, you can start using them in your artwork. Start with a simple shape to learn the process. After creating or loading the shape, select the object. Next, go to the main toolbar in Illustrator to add some special effects. Click on the “Fill Swatch” box and select the texture to one of your new options when the dialog box appears. The pattern will appear on your shape. You can then make adjustments to the texture by lightening the pattern or changing the opacity if you need some customized tweaks. You can also group multiple objects together and use the same texture if you need to make a specialized logo or corporate design.
