How to Resize Images for Twitter

Twitter, like Instagram, is a predominantly mobile platform that users can also browse on their desktop web browsers. The nature of Twitter requires your uploaded profile and post images to be compressed and resized frequently, and to maximize engagement you should always optimize your Twitter images with loss-y JPEG compression in mind.

Luckily the Shutterstock Editor allows you to correctly size images for Twitter use in just a few clicks. Here’s how to resize an image for Twitter based on where it will ultimately be used.

How to Size a Twitter Profile Picture
The Twitter profile picture remained a simple square shape after the redesign, though the image displays as a circle. Keep this in mind when choosing a profile picture, as the corners will not be displayed.

The ideal resolution for a Twitter profile picture is 400 x 400 pixels, though your profile picture will often display as 200 x 200 pixels.

  • Open Shutterstock Editor and choose Open Designs to import your own images, or alternately click and drag your profile image into the Editor directly from your desktop. You can also click the Search tab on the left-hand side of the Editor and browse thousands of high-quality stock photos from Shutterstock.
  • Click the Preset Sizes tab on the left-hand side of the Editor. While there is no option for a Twitter profile picture you can select either Facebook Image or Instagram Post for a square template.
  • The image ratio will automatically be locked. Click on the Width or Height box and type “400” to automatically optimize your design for use as a Twitter profile picture.
  • When your design is complete click Download at the top-right corner and select your preferred File Format. Twitter accepts images formatted as JPEG or PNG.

How to Size a Twitter Profile Header
The Twitter profile header is essentially a banner across the top of your profile. The ideal resolution for a Twitter profile header is 1500 x 500 pixels. Note that Twitter uses responsive design, so your profile header can be re-cropped and scaled repeatedly on a desktop web browser. Choose clean, simple images.

Keep any text or logos near the center of the profile header so they aren’t partially or completely obscured as the image is re-cropped.

  • Open Shutterstock Editor and choose Open Designs to import your own images or click and drag your header image into the Editor from your desktop. You can also click the Search tab on the left-hand side of the Editor and browse Shutterstock’s exhaustive selection of stock photos.
  • Click the Preset Sizes tab on the left-hand side of the Editor. Select Twitter Header to automatically set your image ratio to 1500 x 500. It’s that easy!
  • When your design is complete click Download at the top-right corner and select your preferred File Format. Again, Twitter accepts images formatted as JPEG or PNG.

How to Size a Twitter Timeline Post
Twitter allows every tweet to be accompanied by one to four images. Tweets with images are 34% more likely to be retweeted, so practice incorporating images into your tweets to fuel engagement and grow your brand.

The ideal resolution for a Twitter timeline post is 1024 x 512 pixels. The images upload in a 2:1 ratio, but reducing the pixel count of your designs will create blurry, unprofessional images.

  • Open Shutterstock Editor and select Open Designs to import your own images or click and drag your images for your post into the Editor from your desktop. Alternately, click the Search tab on the left-hand side of the Editor to find the perfect stock photo from Shutterstock.
  • Click the Preset Sizes tab on the left-hand side of the Editor. Select Twitter Post to set your image ratio to 1024 x 512.
  • Once you have finalized your design click Download at the top-right corner and select your preferred File Format. Choose either JPEG or PNG.
