London's commuters were surprised and delighted to see Raymond Briggs' character Fungus come to life and venture above ground in London, and even do a spot of Christmas shopping with celebrity Denise Van Outen, to mark the launch of Sky 1's hotly anticipated family drama Fungus the Bogeyman.

A 7ft Fungus was spotted at locations across the capital, in Victoria station, crossing the Millennium Bridge and taking in the Christmas sights of the capital in the company of one of TV's biggest stars.

Bringing Raymond Briggs' much-loved creation to life, a prosthetic Fungus costume was commissioned and operated by a specialist movement actor. A specialist team of eight took approximately three weeks to create the life-like costume.

The stunt was orchestrated by Sky 1 to celebrate the launch of its funktacular family drama Fungus the Bogeyman, which premieres at 6pm on 27th December.

The three part series boasts a mixture of live action and animation that brings Fungus to life on screen. The cast includes BAFTA nominated Timothy Spall in the title role, as he and his family of Bogeymen navigate our 'above ground' world, frightening humans along the way. Further cast includes Victoria Wood, Joanna Scanlan, Keeley Hawes and Marc Warren with Andy Serkis narrating.

Fungus was also spotted with Denise Van Outen strolling down the Southbank, enjoying a hot chocolate and taking a spin on a carousel. The popular TV and radio presenter, who has starred in EastEnders and on the West End stage, was also runner up on Strictly Come Dancing in 2012.

Denise Van Outen said: "I'm probably lucky Fungus didn't make me stop by his house for a cup of mould wine, but actually he was a real charmer and I had a great time roaming the streets with him. He insisted on paying for my hot chocolate like a true Bogey-gentleman, and I'll certainly be pointing my daughter in the direction of the TV when he hits our screens this Christmas."
