How to Help Combat Copyright Infringement
At Shutterstock, we vigorously pursue copyright infringement issues. The best way to alert us to copyright infringing activity is via email to submit@shutterstock.com. Sometimes submitters post on our forums regarding infringement; this is not the best way to alert us to infringing activity. Often, infringements are discovered by our staff. When this occurs, we actively investigate and take appropriate action on a case-by-case basis. We have been taking steps to cut down on image theft and will continue to do so, but you can help us in this effort.

If you notice your own images being traded or sold on a website or blog, try to determine who is hosting the files by examining the download links for the images. Typically, the files are hosted on sites like rapidshare.com, depositfiles.com, imagehosting.com, and others. Many of the file sharing services will remove the files, or disable the links to them if you follow their procedures. This will not remove the reference to the files from the offending website but will, unless and until someone uploads them again, prevent the files from being freely distributed.

We have found the following text to be effective when dealing with file hosting services. Feel free to copy and paste this into your email program, make the appropriate changes (remove our bold comments) and send to the file sharing site‘s copyright infringement or DMCA notification contact email address.

While this language may seem redundant or awkward, it complies with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. You should be absolutely certain that the images are being used improperly (i.e. sold or traded). Do not send out a DMCA Notice of Copyright Infringement unless you are the copyright owner.
