As our friends at Art Directors Club put the finishing touches on next week’s 2014 ADC Festival of Art + Craft in Miami, we had to take a moment to appreciate a very singular aspect of the proceedings: Laser Cat.
What exactly is Laser Cat? “As its name suggests, Laser Cat is a giant cat with ‘lasers’ for eyes that uses high-powered projectors to beam the personal art projects of our global community onto walls, the sides of buildings… and perhaps even the moon!” says ADC Executive Director Ignacio Oreamuno.
Since the project contains four things we’re very passionate about (art, technology, cats, and lasers), we asked the installation’s creators, Barcelona-based public art collective Hungry Castle, to select some of their favorite works from the nearly 15,000 pieces submitted to the project. Here’s what they chose:
Artist: Kevin Waldron
Title: “Cats”
Year: 2014
Hungry Castle says: “Laser Cat appreciates painterly cat illustrations that are playful.”
Artist: Milton Glaser & Sue Walsh
Title: “Moon”
Year: 2013
Hungry Castle says: “One day Laser Cat wants to project on the moon and he’s got Milton Glaser’s support.”
Artist: James Victore
Title: “Hero*”
Year: 2013
Hungry Castle says: “Laser Cat likes licking hand-crafted, hand-painted ceramic platters… especially ones that make you think. (And what does that asterisk stand for?!)”

Artist: Javier Mariscal
Title: “Fregadero”
Year: 2014
Hungry Castle says: “Laser Cat loves the expressiveness of this painting and the fact Javier did this on an iPad.”
Artist: Maser
Title: “No.27 A nod to Ed Ruscha_2014”
Year: 2014
Hungry Castle says: “Public Art at its brightest. Laser Cat loves this street art installation.”
If you happen to be attending the festivities in Miami, be sure to check out Laser Cat in all its blinged-out glory, and also say hi to Shutterstock! We’ll be setting up an animated gif photobooth for the final evening party on the rooftop of the New World Center, so come and gif it up with us!
Shutterstock’s premium brand, Offset, is also offering a chance to tell stories and win a Leica C camera at the event. Offset images will be on rotation on screens around the festival, each one branded with the hashtag #myoffsetstory. If you see one, take a picture and tweet it with your own story. The best one, announced at the final evening celebration, wins the Leica C!
Pew! Pew!
