“The creative process has always been a way for me to understand something about myself—in relation to the world around me and also to my cultural inheritance,” she tells us. Perhaps she was destined to be an artist from birth, having been brought up as part of a creative family. Like those painters of centuries past, she’s inspired by “the ephemeral beauty of simple and everyday things.”

“I began my food photography blog, The Freaky Table, mid-2015,” she remembers. “It quickly got a big audience, I guess because of the highly curated photography. What initially started as a personal project has become a business, supported by the interest of the many people who allow me to travel for work, to collaborate with companies and agencies, to hold photography and styling workshops, and, most of all, to live off of something I love to do.”

2. Gabriel Cabrera (@artfuldesperado)

“I would like to say I’m inspired by something romantic like ‘being close to the ocean’ or ‘long walks in nature,’ but none of that actually does it for me. It’s daily random stuff like a lady walking on the bus with a really shiny blouse that reflects purple light—and bam! There’s an idea.” – Gabriel Cabrera

Gabriel Cabrera puts a modern, playful twist on classic still life photography. “Nothing I shoot is really true to its state,” the Vancouver-based artist tells. “I always love to add some elements of fantasy—be it a beam of light, some texture, or enhanced colors. The thrill I get from being able to create my own version of a moment is the biggest reward of taking photos.”

Cabrera’s background is in Culinary Arts, and he initially launched his blog Artful Desperado as a way to develop and refine his food styling. “Since I needed to document my dishes, I took courses, practiced day and night, and taught myself photography,” he remembers. “Eventually, I stopped doing hands-on styling and transitioned into full-time photography. Having done almost every aspect of the photo-making process was super valuable and has helped me develop my style.”
