There are plenty of everyday devices that make our lives easier: keyboards have eliminated hand cramps suffered from too much writing, Nespresso machines give us an almost instant pick-me-up when the 2:30pm feeling hits, headphones, even newfangled wireless ones, let us listen to our favorite songs from anywhere. But while these devices help us work faster, work longer, and work on the go, few devices actually enrich our lives the way a camera does.
Cameras are extensions of ourselves: they let us see the world through another lens; they add context to our stories; they let us capture and retrieve memories easily. This intimate connection with our own humanity is what makes cameras a timeless invention and a staple in our everyday lives. Whether you’re a pro, an amateur, or even the (self-professed) “least photogenic person in the world,” you’ve no doubt been happy to have a camera around as life’s little moments unfold before you.
Here are images of people taking pictures — under the sea, on top of mountains, from the sky, in the surf, on the turf — accompanied by the the beloved cameras that let these moments last forever.
