Offset by Shutterstock is a hand-picked collection of extraordinary, engaging imagery from top artists and storytellers around the world.

Light can make or break an image. In photography, it’s what makes the medium possible. But the most dynamic images are those through which the artist plays with light — by capturing how it wraps around a subject, elucidates an otherwise opaque object, creates unique hues, illuminates a city, draws the eye through a composition, or ultimately defines form. New techniques and trends in photography have also allowed artists to create images using light in non-traditional ways.

At Offset, we value the perfect balance of light and shadow, so we’ve curated a collection of images that show how light can create a dramatic subject or storyline. Scroll on for nine images that make dynamic use of light, then discover more in the full Offset “Light” collection.
