Painting with the Mesh Tool in Illustrator - Part 3

Mesh Patches and Multiple Selections

The region between mesh points is called a mesh patch and selecting and applying a color to a mesh patch automatically applies the color to all mesh points that surround it.  This is useful when you want to quickly change colors over a broad area of your mesh object.  Mesh patches can be selected with the Direct Selection tool (white arrow).

Color applied to a mesh patch

Another method of applying a single color to many mesh points is to use the Lasso tool to draw around all the mesh points that you want to select and then apply the color.  Alternatively you can use the Direct Selection tool and whilst holding down Shift, simply click on the different mesh points that you want to select and then apply a color.

Completing the Illustration

Continue using the Mesh tool to create more mesh points in different locations inside the rectangle and assign them different colors (perhaps some tones of blues and purplish colors).  To delete mesh points that you don’t want, just Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac) on them with the Mesh tool.  Now, adjust your mesh point’s positioning and tweak their handles until you feel happy and quickly you can ‘paint’ a dramatic cloudy sky background.

The final illustration

Finally all that is needed is to draw a silhouette of an Olympic runner holding a torch and some rocky terrain with the pen tool.  With everything selected just reflect them along the horizontal axis by using the Object > Transform > Reflect dialog box.  That’s it! You’ve completed an illustration equally as exciting as the thought of the Olympics coming to London itself!  Enjoy painting with the Mesh tool!
