Create 3D Buttons with Extrude and Bevel Effects in Illustrator (Part 2 of series)
Now that we‘ve learned how to create 3D designs using Extrude and Bevel Effects (from Part 1), let‘s examine how you can create buttons with them.

Bevels are Brilliant for Buttons Here‘s a very quick way to make vector interface and web buttons. Still staying in the same dialog box from Part 1, right at the top is the Position menu. Select the Front position in this menu and the extruded rectangle we used for the padlock body will rotate to look a lot like a plastic button. This is because the bevel makes the edges have some attractive highlights. If however it did not have a bevel it would just look like a flat rectangle because now we can only see it from the front and can no longer see the extruded sides.
Click OK to exit the 3D dialog box. Then resize the button with the Scale tool to accommodate any text or icons that you just simply place on top. Try extruding different shapes like circles drawn with the Ellipse tool for round buttons, or capsule shapes drawn with the Rounded Rectangle tool. Also test different Bevel Shapes and Bevel Height values to get different button designs. I‘ve done just that to demonstrate how fast this technique really is!
Creating your own Bevel Shape Variety is the spice of life and if none of the ten default bevel shapes is right for what you‘re modelling you can create your own quite easily. All the bevel shapes in Illustrator are stored as symbols in a file called Bevels.ai. Search for this file within the subfolders where you installed Illustrator, then open it up, and you can draw a single open path with the Pen tool within this file. This path will be your own custom bevel shape so have fun with it. To turn it into a symbol, just drag it into the Symbols panel (bring this up by clicking Window > Symbols). Save the file, restart Illustrator and the next time you look in the Bevel Shapes drop down menu, it‘ll be there ready for use.
Now that you have a good understanding of the 3D Extrude and Bevel effect, it‘s your turn to discover the endless possibilities you can achieve with it! |
