Uploading Vectors to Shutterstock, Step By Step

Vector illustrations are wildly popular among Shutterstock customers, and for good reason. Not only can they be upsized indefinitely without losing quality, they can also have a completely different look from traditional photos. If you create vectors, you can really let your imagination go wild (just like the guy below)!

Many of our artists have achieved good sales from their vectors. If you’re interested in getting started as a vector contributor on Shutterstock, the first thing you should know is that uploading vectors is a slightly different process than uploading photos. But have no fear, by the end of this post you’ll be a master of this simple process.

To upload your vectors correctly:

1. Log in to your Shutterstock Submit account at http://submit.shutterstock.com.

2. Click on “Submit Photos” and select your method of upload, then start adding your images.

Keep in mind:

  • Vector uploads require that two files be uploaded at the same time: An EPS file and a preview JPEG file. We accept EPS files that are compatible with Adobe Illustrator 10 and Illustrator 8. The EPS should be no larger than 15MB. The JPEG should be approximately 800 pixels on the long side at 72 DPI.
  • Each file must be named exactly the same, character for character, except for the extension. For example:
    • vector_example.jpg
    • vector_example.eps
  • Please wait until both files have uploaded before proceeding to keywording. If you open this page before both files have uploaded, the .jpg may get separated from the .eps, be rejected as too small, and your vector submission will be lost.
  • If you have uploaded via FTP, it may take some time for both of your files to finish processing, maybe even up to a half hour, so please be patient.
  • To make sure that your uploads have all been processed, check your images on the editor page. All vector submissions should say “(vector)” either on or below the image, as shown here. If the word vector does not appear, please wait up to a half hour and reload the page.

3. Add keywords and the appropriate categories.

Keep in mind:

  • The system automatically adds vectors to the category “Vectors,” but you must also check the “Illustrations/Clipart” box AND choose the category “Illustrations/Clipart.” You may also choose one additional category.
  • We recognize EXIF information in the .jpg and in the .eps.

4. Submit. You did it! Now wait for your images to be reviewed.

With these instructions, you should be up and running in no time. We can’t wait to see your vectors!

    Hi Jorge,
If you made your illustrations by hand or using Photoshop for example, you have to “vectorize” it on apropriate programs like Corel Draw or Illustrator. It´s like redoing the whole image using the programs tools.
There are also programs that raster automatically a .jpg image to a vector, but some adjustments by hand are often required.
Try searching for how to convert a .jpg image to a vector tutorial on the web for further info.
    Good luck!

hi,
I’m having some trouble saving my file, my version of Illustrator is cs5 I think version 15 is it? my vector format has a size of 3.5mb, but when I go to save in eps, go to 43 mb, I think something is wrong.
My procedure is: save as, then change the format ai to eps, then change the version of Illustrator cs5 to 8, none for preview, but to embed fonts and include postoscript cmyk files in RGB, preserve paths (discard transparent) or preserve appearance and overprints ????

My doubt is my procedure correct?

what should I change to save the correct file for the acceptance of shutterstock?

I read that the file can not be larger than 15mb, how can I save my file so do not be so heavy?
