Popular Contributor Camera: Canon EOS Rebel T2i (500D)

Budget-conscious photographers who also want to try their hand at shooting stills and HD videos, should consider the Canon EOS Rebel T2i (known outside the U.S. as the 550D), which is a sort of “baby brother” to the 7D. Smaller and not as rugged as the 7D, the T2i, has many of the same features as its older and more expensive sibling. Using a very similar 18-megapixel sensor to the 7D, the Rebel T2i can also capture full 1080p HD video at the touch of a button on the rear of the camera. And yes, like the 7D it can shoot video at 24 frames per second, 25fps, and 30fsp settings, offering budding filmmakers a range of video options. The T2i is slower overall than the 7D though, shooting photos at just 3.7fps. ISO range for ISO range is 100 to 6400 with an extension option to ISO 12,800. Like the 7D, individual pixel size on the T2i’s APS-C, CMOS imaging sensor is 4.3 microns which produces some of the same noise issues when shooting at high ISOs. If you pair the Rebel T2i with a good lens though – and since it sells for $799 (body only) you’ll have extra money for glass – image quality is comparable to what you’ll get with some prosumer or even pro cameras. On the downside, it has a more consumer-oriented 9-point autofocus system and feels downright dainty compared to the more durable 7D. But at less than half the price, this mini-7D is a bargain. — Dan Havlik
