From the mountains to the prairies, photographer Joseph Sohm has traversed all 50 states to capture America through his camera lens. Joseph—known on Shutterstock by his contributor name, “Spirit of America”—has been photographing scenes of the United States since the 1980s to showcase the idea of democracy, what he calls “the greatest idea of the second millenium.” Joseph shoots thousands of images on this theme, saying, “you can’t capture democracy in a single image.”

With scenes from every state, Joseph’s images give viewers a true American road trip experience. This cross-country adventure includes some of the most iconic landmarks in the U.S.A., as well as serene small towns and majestic landscapes found throughout our diverse countryside. Such familiar faces as Mount Rushmore and Lady Liberty appear in his collection along with the purple mountains and open plains of the West. Joseph’s dedication and powerful imagery has led to other career-defining moments, including working on a multimedia project with the Boston Pops and Clint Eastwood. He even recently photographed President Obama.
