At Shutterstock, we’re always paying attention to the popular keywords customers use to find pictures on our site.

Words are very flexible tools – and some are used for heavier lifting than others. On their own, many words carry multiple meanings. Trying to match words with pictures, and pictures with words, can be one of the most challenging and satisfying parts of design.

Take the word “play,” for example – a popular keyword on our site. If you were going to illustrate the word visually, what definition would you choose? A dramatic composition, or children having fun? The button on your DVD remote, or a musician performing?
